How do I check that an LEI is really the provider's?
Look the identifier up in GLEIF, the register that issues them, and keep the answer with the provider record.
- 1
Open the provider from Third Parties.
You should see: Under the provider name, a line about the LEI - either that it has not been checked, or what GLEIF said and when.
- 2
Choose Check with GLEIF.
You should see: The line is replaced by the registered legal name and registration status, with the date it was asked.
- 3
Compare the registered name with the name on your contract, and correct whichever is wrong.
A difference is not automatically an error. Firms trade under names that are not their registered ones. It is a question for you, which is why the product raises it and does not change anything.
Worth knowing
If GLEIF cannot be reached, nothing is recorded. A lookup that could not be performed is a fact about the network that day, not about your register, and recording it as a result would eventually put a false statement in an audit pack.
If you change the LEI after checking it, the check is marked as no longer applying to the new identifier and the validation screen asks you to run it again. An old confirmation must never vouch for a value nobody checked.
The date shown is when GLEIF was last ASKED, not when it last agreed. A four-year-old confirmation is not evidence about today.
